The Orange City School District proudly announces the recipients of the 2012 Lander Circle Kiwanis Staff Members of the Year awards!!!

Congratulations to Elementary School Teacher of the Year Dr. Sandra Alexander-Haynes; Staff Member of the Year Ann Magill; and Secondary School Teacher of the Year Betsey Lee!  Dr. Alexander-Haynes is a psychologist at Moreland Hills Elementary School; Magill is a paraprofessional and Lee is the media specialist/librarian at Brady Middle School.

“We appreciate the Kiwanis recognition of our teachers and staff each year because it further emphasizes the high quality of our staff,” noted Superintendent Dr. Nancy Wingenbach. “We’re fortunate to have exceptional instructional and support staff members to work with the children of the Orange Schools Community. The annual Kiwanis recognition is eagerly anticipated by our staff each year.”

Special recognition was given by the Orange City School District and the Kiwanis to the family of beloved teacher Alla Bogomolnaya (1956-2012) for her distinguished years of dedication and service to the Orange Schools before her untimely passing last spring.

"Alla's nomination for this award should not be surprising to anyone that knew of Alla's passion for teaching and her gift to inspire others," said Dr. Paul Lucas.  "William Arthur Ward once stated that 'The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.'  I had the privilege to work with Alla for 10 years…she was a great teacher."

Alla’s husband Mikhail Sapozhnik and her children Eugene and Ellen Weinstein returned to Orange to receive a plaque in her honor.  In thanking everyone, the family also announced a foundation that was set-up in her memory.  Friends can learn more about the fund at http://www.uhgiving.org/alla.

"We were honored and humbled to receive this Kiwanis award on Alla's behalf in recognition of her unwavering dedication to the Orange community," noted her family members. "We are tremendously grateful to the Orange Schools for helping us honor her memory and spread the word about the Alla Bogomolnaya Fund for Colon Cancer Research."

The presentation of the awards was the culmination of Convocation Day activities held at Orange High School on August 21st. Staff members attended the annual school year kick-off event which followed a breakfast hosted by the Orange High School PTA. As staff members entered the auditorium, they were welcomed in song by the award-winning Brady Middle School Saxophone Quartet (under the direction of Dr. Craig Kepner) comprised of eighth graders Nick Buchanan, Steven Kish, Jeremy Stark and Aidan Scheer.

The morning’s events included speeches by Orange School administrators and Board President Sam Steinhouse and a video welcoming new staff members, with a nod to the 2012 retirees. This was followed by the presentation of the Kiwanis Awards by school administrators and Lander Circle Kiwanis President Dr. Phillip Wallace.

The Kiwanis Awards celebrate excellence in education at the Orange Schools and were first presented in 1990 to promote the teaching profession. Recognition is given annually to an elementary teacher, a secondary teacher, and an Orange staff member who has shown significant energy and vision in his/her commitment to teaching or position; has demonstrated continued interaction with teachers, staff, and students; and has made positive contributions to the school and community. Each award winner’s family and friends were on-hand to surprise the recipient on the auditorium stage as her name was announced.  A complete list of winners from years past is available at: http://www.orangeschools.org/district/orange/awards/LanderCircleKiwanisAwardWinners

Congratulations to all of our award winners, our dedicated staff, and our talented students!!!
