Student Writers Receive Outstanding Accolades


Congratulations on even more accolades for 2013 Power of the Pen top achievers Maddy Carek (left) and Jake Van de Walle (right)!!!

Ninth grader Jake Van de Walle, who won the Power of the Pen's Elsie Beachler Creative Talent Award and The College of Wooster $24,000 Scholarship Award at the State Competition last year along with three Best of the Best Awards at the Regional Competition, has been chosen by author Sharon Draper as this year's Promising Young Talent Award winner. He will be recognized at this year's Power of the Pen State Tournament and he will receive a cash award and special accolades from Draper.

Classmate Maddy Carek, who earned the first place award out of nearly 400 competitors at the 2013 State Tournament, will be included in the The Power of the Pen's "The Winners" book. She will have her picture, a story, and a biographical statement published.

Congratulations to both Maddy and Jake on these outstanding writing achievements!
