Information Regarding State Testing; Opt Out Info
February 17, 2015
Dear Parents and Guardians,

During the next few weeks, students in third grade through 12th grade will be taking new state-mandated assessments called the Ohio Computer Based Assessments also known as PARCC and AIR.

For students in third grade through eighth grade, the new assessments replace all Ohio Achievement Assessments except for third grade reading. The third graders will continue to take the OAA third grade reading assessment.

For students in ninth grade through 12th grade, the new assessments will replace the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT).

The class of 2017 will be the last to take the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT).
High school students enrolled in the following courses will take corresponding new assessments this year: Freshmen English, Physical Science, Algebra 1, Geometry, US Studies (except AP), and Government (except AP).

All of the new assessments are administered in two parts:
  • Performance-Based Assessments (February and March)
  • End-of-Year Assessments (April and May)
Our staff continues to work with students on these assessments by utilizing personnel and technology resources to implement the new tests in a computerized format that will provide accessibility for all students.

State and federal law requires all students to take state tests. If a parent wishes to have his or her child opt out of the test, it should be documented in writing. Please read the right column of our Curriculum and Instruction webpage for details on consequences to the child and the district along with opt out contact information. Keep in mind that every student score has a significant impact on our District’s composite results.

Orange is committed to providing students with a world-class education focusing on authentic innovative instruction. These tests are just one measure of a balanced educational program of academic excellence that is a strong tradition here at Orange Schools.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Edwin S. Holland
Superintendent of Orange Schools
