OHS Mock Trial Teams Are STATE-BOUND!!!

Following a rigorous competition at the Cleveland Courthouse on Friday, three Orange High School teams -- the most in the state from one school -- were invited to the State Competition in Columbus from March 12-14.

OHS students on teams Apollo, Ares, and Zeus won two trials at the regional competition representing both the plaintiff and the defense sides against tough competitors including Solon, Mentor, and Gilmore Academy to secure their spots at the state level. Each year the school picks a theme from which the team name and colors are derived. This year's OHS theme is Greek Mythology.

The fictional case that the students study for months before the competition centers on a student's Eighth Amendment claims of cruel and unusual punishment following an injury at a juvenile correctional institution when guards responded to a cafeteria food fight.

Out of the 20 teams invited to the Regional Competition, including Team Poseidon also from OHS, only six teams were invited to the State Competition, half of those from Orange!

Mock Trial offers an "innovative approach to learning about law and how our legal system functions." The students study a case and must defend a position against other schools and before a judge. Each team has four student lawyers representing the prosecution and the defense with the other team members acting as witnesses. Teachers David Chordas and Mark Kimball guide the students with help from volunteer legal advisor Chuck Jarrett.

For the past two years, an OHS Mock Trial team has made it to the State Finals held in the Ohio Statehouse. The winner advances to the national competition.

Individual awards are also presented.  Regional awards for Best Attorney went to: Tejas Kashyap, Melissa Ma, Tom Middleton, Eva Rudow, Emma Saks, Juan Sanabria, and Max Simon. Best Witness Awards went to Zayn Dweik, Shelby Ingram, Liz Kaplan, and Ned Sabanegh.
The members of Team Apollo include:  Clare Ubersax, Shelby Ingram, Melissa Ma, Demi Zhang, Andrew Swift, Gabe Sugerman, Max Simon, and Chris Jin.  Team Ares is comprised of:  Poojajeet Khaira, Ned Sabanegh, Rebekah Shuffer, Nolan Wiley, Ray Weisberg, Emma Saks, Eva Rudow, Alisa Hill, and Emily Stankovic. Team Zeus includes: Tejas Kashyup, Eben Carek, Andrew Levy, Ian Newman, Juan Sanabria, Zayn Dweik, Liz Kaplan, and Ben Levine. They will all be competing at the State level.

All of the photographs from the Regional Competition are available on our Orange City School District Facebook page. You may access the album by clicking here.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Regional Mock Trial competition on Friday -- you all were outstanding!

Good luck to teams Apollo, Ares and Zeus as you compete for the State Title!!!
