OCSD Removes Voluntarily Recalled Apple Slices From Menu
May 01, 2015
As a result of a voluntary recall of packaged apple slices by Sun Rich Fresh Foods Inc., the Orange City School District has removed packages of the recalled apple slices from its daily lunch menus as a precaution. The packages of apple slices had been available to students at Brady Middle School and Orange High School this week as part of the lunch offerings. The packages have not been offered at Moreland Hills Elementary School since last week. All remaining packages were destroyed immediately upon learning of the recall.
Sun Rich Fresh Foods Inc. of Brampton, Ontario issued the voluntary product recall due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria is an organism which can cause serious, and sometimes fatal, infections in young children, frail or elderly people and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms to watch for in generally healthy individuals are high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Anyone noticing these symptoms in a child that has eaten these apple slices within the last 72 hours should contact the child's primary care physician.
