Mentorship Guidelines

Gifted & Talented
OHS Gifted Resources

The Orange City Schools seeks to offer students the opportunity to enrich their academic experience through programs extending beyond the school day and calendar.  The mentorship program, under the larger umbrella of the C.O.M.P. program, assists students in finding mentors in a field of interest.  The students will meet with their mentor outside of the school day, unless extenuating circumstances present themselves that would warrant brief periods of time spent away from Orange High School.

The mentorship program is designed for students who may be ready to extend themselves beyond the prescribed curriculum.  Students must be responsible and dedicated to setting goals with their mentor, adhering to those goals and generally behaving in a professional, mature manner throughout the course of the experience.

MENTORSHIP GUIDELINES

  • Students must be in good academic standing
  • Students must initiate the mentor experience by writing a letter of intent, which may be used to help locate a potential mentor
  • Once a mentor is secured, students will submit the following:

- A proposal, which will be signed by the mentor, the student, and a faculty representative from Orange High School.

- The goal setting forms, including time frame and level of commitment goals.
The student, the mentor and a faculty representative must sign these forms.

- A current resume

  • Students must secure transportation to and from the mentorship location
  • Students must abide by any safety, confidentiality and corporate or organizational guidelines
  • Students must maintain the highest ethical standards and demonstrate a willingness to learn as well as a mature, responsible demeanor
  • Students are expected to contact their mentor personally if they are unable to meet at a scheduled time and are expected to reschedule that missed meeting time
  • In order for the mentorship experience to appear on the second page of a student’s transcript, the student must:
    • Complete a journal entry after each mentor session
    • Meet/ communicate regularly with the supervising teacher
    • Create a unique project that will contribute in some way to the field itself, such as a piece of original work that directly relates to the mentorship and contributes to the field
