Helpful, Practical Tips

Do You Know?

Do you know that Styrofoam lasts thousands of years in a landfill?  No local service wants to recycle Styrofoam because it is so bulky and expensive to transport.  In our community, Heinen’s pays thousands of dollars a year to have our Styrofoam recycled.  What a wonderful contribution to our area.

A few years ago, our lunch service switched from washable plastic trays to Styrofoam trays, which go directly to a landfill.  Thousands of trays are tossed weekly.  The Green Team is working with the P.T.A. to pilot a program using compostable trays made from sugar cane, requesting a grant from Orange Schools Foundations to help with the extra .04 a tray.  We want to make Orange Schools a state leader in protecting the environment for our children.

Do You Know?

That Americans throw away 40 million water bottles a DAY and less than 20% are recycled? Plastic is made from petroleum and takes decades to biodegrade. It will help if everyone has their own personal, washable water bottle and if everyone recycles all plastic bottles and glass.

Do You Know?

That every piece of paper you recycle can be reused 5 to 7 more times?  Students and staff at Moreland, Brady, and Orange High School can recycle paper in their classrooms or directly into the yellow and green bins near the schools.

Do You Know?

That you can recycle a beer bottle even if a lime wedge is stuck in the bottom?  And what about those last bits of peanut butter in the jar?  You can put the items in with your regular recycling and the recycling plant should be able to remove most contaminants.  Paper recycling, however, is a more delicate process (which is why pizza boxes are a no-no.)  For everything, though, the cleaner your recyclables are, the less energy it will take to process them.
