OHS Library Receives James Patterson, Scholastic Reading Grant

Congratulations to Orange High School on recently receiving a $6000 grant from bestselling author James Patterson to support its school library. In addition, Scholastic Reading Club will match each dollar of Patterson’s donation with “bonus points” that teachers can use to acquire books and other materials for their classrooms. Orange High School was selected from 27,924 applications for funding grants.

This grant will sustain the success and expansion of the “Book Buddy” program in the Orange City School District. The program began two years ago with Orange High School students desiring to pay it forward by mentoring elementary school students with goals of modeling an excitement for literature, gaining an appreciation for pleasure reading, exposing children to different types of literature, and the ultimate benefit of fostering a lifelong reader through positive modeling. Without this generous grant, OHS would not be able to expand the “Book Buddy” program.

“I saw an amazing change in my book buddy’s confidence level and it really made me feel good that I could do that for someone else,” said OHS junior Kelsey Passov.

“I love participating in Book Buddies because it is amazing to know that I’ve made an impact on a little kid’s life and I am a role model for them,” added OHS senior Kate Wauschek.

“Seeing the difference in the Book Buddies from the start to the end, not only as readers but as people and students, was the most amazing and prideful feeling in the world,” said OHS junior Arianna Koufman.

As a result of receiving this school library grant, OHS will be able to include: a Readers are Leaders Academy for high school students, an entrepreneurial component including an author visit or author chat, books that promote creative thinking and innovation, an intersession day for the Book Buddies to read and then create an original product together in a shared Makerspace, and materials for Book Buddies.

“Orange High School is thrilled and honored to receive the James Patterson/Scholastic Reading Club school library grant,” said Joanna McNally, Librarian. “Too many school libraries across the nation do not have the support or funds for school library programming, school library resources, and student led enrichment opportunities. We are fortunate to have the support of our school administration and community and are thankful that James Patterson and Scholastic Reading Club value the important role school librarians have in educating and supporting the whole child, not just the well-tested child.”

As part of an ongoing effort to keep books and reading a number one priority in the United States, bestselling author James Patterson, together with Scholastic Reading Club made a commitment to help save school libraries nationwide. This year alone, Patterson personally donated $1.75 million to school libraries nationwide, with grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 allocated to each of the 467 selected schools. This grant is the first-ever partnership of its kind.

“These grants are my humble acknowledgement of some of the terrific work taking place in libraries,” says Patterson. “Here’s to communities supporting school libraries. Here’s to a country that makes reading a priority. Here’s to flourishing libraries and to a joyful holiday season!”
