Moreland Hills School power outage update

9/13/2021

Dear Moreland Hills Families,

First, I apologize for the great inconvenience that came with the short notice of a calamity day for Moreland Hills School this morning. Over the weekend, there was a car crash involving a pole that interrupted electrical service to the District. Ted Roseberry, Director of Business and Operations was on campus yesterday, and he was told by First Energy that power issues affecting MHS would be resolved no later than 7 AM.

As of 7 AM this morning, we were told by First Energy that they could not guarantee getting a crew out to further inspect the problem before 8 AM. While the generator at MHS can provide emergency lighting, the HVAC system cannot be sustained. So in addition to inadequate learning conditions with poor lighting, hot classrooms and the usual complications of electricity loss, taking away both the UV lighting mitigation as well as air flow/exchange in the classrooms and cafeteria further exacerbate the conditions, thus making cancellation the safest choice.

The power issue will be addressed by First Energy today, and I am hopeful that we will have full electrical service in place so we can resume school tomorrow. We will send out an update later today to keep you informed. Again, I apologize for these unfortunate circumstances and any inconveniences associated with the late calamity day notice as we continue to strive to keep the kids safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lynn Campbell
Superintendent
